About Lafayette Colorado

Originally a coal mining camp, Lafayette was founded in 1878.  With great access to Denver and Boulder, Lafayette began developing as a bedroom community for commuting couples.   The town has acquired an employment base, with the hospital, retail and office parks.  Downtown is in process of developing as an arts community, with many dining options.

Schools

The primary school district in Lafayette is the Boulder Valley School District.  In 2010 a headline read “Boulder Valley Schools Top State Rankings”.  BVSD had 26 “excellent” ratings awarded to 23 individual schools, which was more than any other school district in the state.

High Schools (9th -12th grade): Centaurus, Peak to Peak Charter (K-12)

Middle Schools (6th -8th grade): Angevine, Peak to Peak Charter (K-12)

Elementary Schools (K- 5th grade): Lafayette, Peak to Peak Charter (K-12), Pioneer, Ryan, Sanchez

Recreation

Lafayette is a quiet residential community.  A great spot is Waneka Lake, which has a 1.2 mile trail around the lake with a park, paddle boats/canoes, catch and release fishing and picnic areas.  Coal Creek trail meanders through town and is a shady exercise spot in summer.  Indian Peaks golf course is a Hale Irwin designed course.   The Bob Burger recreation center has a gym, pool, and full workout facilities.  There is a YMCA with an ice rink and outdoor pool.   Festival Plaza in old town has fountains for the children to play in during summer months.   There are many other parks and trails to explore.

Restaurants

Lafayette’s Public Road is the historical downtown with several great restaurants as well as shops.  You can enjoy Italian (Pinocchio’s), Mexican (Efrain’s & Santiago’s), oriental  foods (Thai and Pho), coffee (Canon Mine), and American.  The other area with several dining options is Arapahoe & 95th St.  There are two districts; Atlas Valley & Forest Park (Nissi’s for music, Walnut Café and 95 Bistro) .  

Shopping 

Shopping in Lafayette has a few primary intersections.  The arts and boutique district is along Public Rd; antiques and gift shops as well as Lafayette Florist.   S. Boulder Rd, between Hwy 287 & Public has a Vitamin Cottage and Sprouts grocery stores as well as specialized shopping.  Arapahoe & 95th Street has a bakery, gift shops and wine oriented liquor store.  Baseline & Hwy 287 hosts several strip malls that include a King Soopers grocery store and Walgrens pharmacy.
